In my one month experimental monitoring of my blog, I carefully managed and observed the visits. Here are some summaries:
1. The day a new blog is posted often drives in traffic. But, depending on the content, the traffic could be higher or lower in its increase.
2. Sharing blog links on Twitter greatly boosts traffic. Look at this picture of traffic - the highest two peaks are partly results of Twitter sharing.
3. However, the biggest contributor to the peaks are social mentions beyond just Twitter. Share your blog link in every social network you use - put it in your Pinterest pins descriptions, in your bios, in your online class discussions, in your YouTube videos and descriptions, in your LinkedIn profile, in everything that is relevant!

4. Share old blog posts that are still relevant to date regularly to attract new audience. Your valuable content shouldn't be buried in the archive. They deserve to be read, liked, shared, and popularized.

As you can see, people don't usually automatically come back to your blog - understandably probably because it's hard to remember it when you are not Jeff Bullas or Guy Kawasaki. So you got to present your content to them, in multiple ways and multiple times, to drive them in through a click right at the thing (be it a Tweet, a pin, a video or a thread of discussion) they are looking at.
Be smart and know the "what, when, how, where" of your content.
